Labor Day Weekend Family Vacation Camp @ Wente Scout Reservation
Family Vacation Camp at Wente Scout Reservation offers numerous fun and exciting activities for people of all ages. Archery and BB gun are great for everybody and the rifle, shotgun, and black powder ranges offer a rousing challenge for older campers. An 80-acre lake provides a great place to lie in the sun or swim on a warm afternoon. There are plenty of shallow areas for the little ones and areas for the experienced swimmer too. The lake also offers the opportunity to row a boat, paddle a canoe or kayak, or just lean back and enjoy the sun as a stiff breeze pushes you along in a sailboat. Bring your fishing gear! Catch a mess of blue gill or large-mouth bass. Wente’s lake provides excellent fishing even for the smaller children. You can enjoy the miles and miles of trails while riding one of our strings of Western saddle horses. Don’t forget to stop by the craft area where you can make something that will always remind you of the good times you had at Family Vacation Camp.
The WSR Trading Post offers a variety of ice cream, candy and other snack items as well as Wente Scout Reservation memorabilia and other camping supplies.
Like most national, state, or private campgrounds, you will be sleeping in tents. You have the option to use canvas Boy Scout tents or you can bring your own. Large groups of multiple families wishing to camp together can be assigned a large site in advance. Otherwise all accommodations are selected as first come, first served upon your arrival at camp. Hot showers and restrooms are conveniently located nearby each of the major campground areas.
The Meadow open camping area is normally available late in the Summer. Wente also has an RV campground with 7 sites that have electrical hookups, and water spigots nearby. There is an additional fee of $30 (for the whole weekend) to utilitize the RV hook-ups and parking area.
A great choice of two food plans is available. The first is bring your own food to camp. Perishables may be stored in the walk-in refrigerator room outside the kitchen. All other food MUST be stored in your vehicles at night so there are no problems with the abundant wildlife and other critters. The second choice is camp meals prepared by our kitchen staff and served in the camp dining hall. Eat like the Scouts do during summer camp, and these varied and nutritious meals are available for a very reasonable fee. Meals begin with Saturday breakfast and end with Sunday dinner. Breakfast Monday is available for an additional fee for those on the meal plan and for those who are cooking their own food. Sunday evening there is an ice cream social - a tradition of many years at Family Camp - which is included in your fee for either food plan.
